MICATA Announces Details of 2010 Symposium

Plans are underway for this year's MICATA Symposium, which will be held May 21-23 on the campus of the Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. The theme of the symposium is "Looking to the Future: What's Next for Translators and Interpreters".

The event will begin with a welcome reception for attendees on Friday evening at the Capitol Federal Conference Center and Atrium at the Regnier Center. Saturday's sessions will be held at the Carlsen Center and will begin with welcome remarks by Lynne Overesch-Maister of the JCCC Modern Language Department, followed by the plenary session presented by ATA president-elect Dorothee Racette. After the plenary session we will offer presentations in three concurrent tracks: one focusing on translators, a second on interpreters and a third on translation technology.

Proposed topics to be presented include career paths for translators and interpreters, how to work with direct clients, understanding the ATA certification exam, making the most of your freelance business, ethics for interpreters, consortium exam for interpreters, certification commission for healthcare interpreters, Reel Justice: an interpreting practicum for court interpreters, free and open source software, social media for translators, and discussion of various translation tools.

Symposium registration includes all the above activities as well as lunch and coffee breaks. Registration information will be coming out shortly, look for it in your inbox.  You can always find a registration form also on MICATA's website home page.  Click on the Home tab above.

An optional ATA certification exam will be offered on Sunday. This requires prior approval and registration through ATA headquarters, for more information go to www.atanet.org
